THE MUSIC IN beyond
Music plays an important role in BEYOND, and Al Sgro did a beautiful job creating the score and sound design for the film.
AL SGRO
Al Sgro's musical career began as a multi-instrumentalist, touring the world with Gary Jules on the success of his seminal "Mad World" cover from the movie Donnie Darko. He later interned with composer Mike Andrews and was given his first glimpse into the process of scoring for motion pictures.
He helped launch The Hotel Cafe, a renowned music venue in Hollywood, produced various indie albums, and was part of the team that scored six seasons of the ABC Studios' hit Cougar Town, starring Courteney Cox. Since then, some notable scoring projects include CBS's prime time reboot, Rush Hour, YouTube Red's single-cam comedy, Me and My Grandma, with Rhea Perlman, and Mark Gordon's Youth & Consequences. He also worked with the BEYOND team on their 2020 doc, Where is Nancy?
Al is a recipient of an ASCAP Film & TV Music award, a Latin Grammy, 2 Grammy nominations, and two LA Theatre Ovation Award nominations.
MAKING THE MUSIC IN BEYOND
“Because BEYOND was shot so intimately, I featured solo instruments to enhance its very personal nature. Kristen Teodtman's violin work was key in this regard. Showcased in the opening music, her performance is simple and pure, building to a cacophonous emotional crescendo.
The boys, though unable to speak, are always communicating, and in their eyes there's a struggle to be understood. It can manifest as wild and desperate, but just as often it's still and very quiet. Gentle, found percussion converys this internalized effort-- a constant-running engine-- and a chorus of stacked male voices was a way of communicating their sweetness without using words.” - Al Sgro
